The Sword and the Spirit

The Sword and the Spirit

On February 27th in 380 AD Roman Emperor Theodosius made Christianity into the official state religion. It was one of the most catastrophic events in Church history.

Up until the time Constantine legalized the church in 313 AD, the great strength of the Church was the fact that the Kingdom of God resided within the believers. Under Constantine the Church became “respectable” and began to attract the ambitious and worldly who would make a show of outward piety without an inward transformation. After 380 AD, the Church was swamped with unconverted Pagans and the outward rituals replaced the inner power for most Church members. And the Church adopted Pagan holidays and rituals to make the Pagans feel more at home.

The first to clothe themselves in the new mantle of the State religion were the emperors themselves. The major church Bishops at Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem also caught the power bug. Within less than a century the Jewish Bishop of Jerusalem was gone, the Antioch church was forced out to become the Nestorian Church, and the Egyptian Christians were forced out to become the Coptic Church. The Bishop of Rome was forced to trade Church recognition for military protection in Western Europe in order to remain independent of the Eastern Roman Emperor and the Bishops of Constantinople. In 1054 AD the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox finally split and went their separate ways.

The marriage between Church and State meant that religious questions would be solved with the sword instead of the Spirit. Early victims of the sword included the Arian Christian Visigoths and the Coptic Christians. Instead of sending missionaries, the State Church sent armies to forcibly convert the heathen and the heretics. When the European Church split between Protestants and Catholics the rulers forced their own views to be followed in their realms and millions of Christians were martyred. Sadly, only in recent history has the concept of religious freedom been accepted in Christian nation.

As we escape the long dark night of State religion it is good to remember Paul’s advice in the 14th chapter of Romans to tolerate the faith of our Christian brothers and Peter’s advice from his first letter to treat non-Christians with gentleness and respect. Finally, our Popes, Archbishops, Bishops, Pastors, and Elders have cast aside their swords and are (mostly) trying to follow Christ’s command to love their brothers. The Spirit has triumphed over the sword.

Let us pray for reconciliation of the Church and focus on expanding the whole Kingdom of God. Pray that the world will know us not by our swords, but by our love and unity in the Spirit.

The Nimrod Spirit

The Nimrod Spirit

Most Christians recognize Nimrod as the builder of the Tower of Babel, but few know the whole story and recognize his influence down through the ages.

The historical Sumerian Kings list records him as “Enmer Kar”, a name which translates into vowelless Hebrew as “NMR” (Nimrod) with the name “Kar” meaning “The Hunter” (as Nimrod is known in the Bible).  The Sumerians credit him with introducing the worship of the “Queen of Heaven,” a false pagan goddess which has come down the ages as Inana, Asherah, Isis, Venus, and numerous others.  The Tower of Babel was a Ziggurrat, or a magical model of heaven, where the pagan “Gods” from heaven could be contacted.  Josephus tells us that Nimrod rebelled against God because he hated God for judging mankind in Noah’s Flood.   His name “The Hunter” indicates a violent disposition, and many believe that he was a Tyrant who hunted men.

Nimrod had set himself above the plans and purposes of God.  After the flood God had commanded mankind to fill the Earth, but Nimrod kept them under his thumb in Mesopotamia.  Nimrod went so far as to set himself up as the “Seed of Woman”, the Messiah promised in Gensis 3:15, to cement His political power.

But God sent the Tower of Babel judgment, producing a civil war which overthrew Nimrod and scattered humanity over the Earth.  Sadly, however, many ambitious men had learned from Nimrod and took the Nimrod Spirit with them to enslave their fellow men.

So we see the Nimrod Spirit echoing through the ages in rulers like the Pharaohs of Egypt, the Kings of Assyria, Babylon, and Persia, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Genghis Khan, Napoleon, Stalin, Hitler and Mao Tse Tung, to name a few, following Nimrod’s path to power.  The Nimrod Spirit comes upon those who want to rule over other men, establishing tyrannical government and putting themselves above God and His purposes.  The Nimrod Spirit deceives the followers of the Tyrant through a false religion such as paganism, or a false philosophy such as Communism, which legitimizes the power of the Tyrant.  For those who are not deceived, the Hunter rules through fear and terror.

Even today, the Nimrod Spirit controls most of the nations of the Earth. Nimrod  is constantly looking for ways to subvert those nations with shared power or democratic institutions, as in the African tragedies of “one man, one vote, one time” after Colonialism or the subversion of Russia by Putin.  Even in the United States individual liberties are being eroded by an increasingly powerful government.  Outside of government the Nimrod Spirit is active in large businesses and social institutions.  The Church is also plagued by the Nimrod Spirit as many pastors and leaders are more intent of building their own kingdoms than in building God’s Kingdom.

The answer to the Kingdoms of the Nimrod Spirit is to move into the Kingdom of God.  God’s Kingdom comes within the believers, giving them discernment to see through Nimrod’s deceptions and power to overcome the fear weapon of Nimrod.  Christians should be on guard against the Nimrod Spirit in their churches, remembering that Jesus established a standard of Servant Leadership which is diametrically opposed to Nimrod.  Churches are to be run by the mothers and fathers, called Elders in the Bible, who are interested in the outcome of their flock, rather than Nimrod Spirit leadership which is often interested only in the income from the flock.

Let us begin our warfare against the Nimrod Spirit at home by praying that the Nimrod Spirit will be exposed and driven out of our churches.  Pray for a revival of Servant Leadership and a spirit of Unity between church leaders which will bring them together to advance God’s Kingdom, not their own.

Beyond the Church it is easy to identify the Nimrod Spirit in action.  Washington, D.C. is full of Nimrods, as are corporations, unions, universities, and the media.  Even Christians have been deceived by false philosophies such as Socialism or the attempt to submerge individual rights into group rights, as in some labor unions which create group leaders who are often little Nimrods.  We are desperately in need of a Christian Awakening to remove the blinders and drive the Nimrod Spirit out of our government before it is too late.    Only a revival, expanding the Kingdom of God, can save us from the Nimrod Spirit.

Throughout the world the Nimrod spirit continues its bloody march through history, keeping billions of people in tyranny and the resulting poverty.  Only the week we have seen bloody results of the Nimrod Spirit operating in Ukraine and Venezuela. As in America, the only answer is the Kingdom of God, which has liberated some two billion of us from the Kingdom of darkness by Satan, the ultimate Nimrod.   In the end Satan will rally the Nimrods of the Earth to fight against Jesus as He returns to establish the outward Kingdom of God, and then Nimrod Spirit will final be broken.

Until then, we must use the spiritual weapons of our warfare to keep praying for the expansion of the Kingdom of God and freedom from the Nimrod Spirit.

RESEARCH AND TRENDSA Nation in Moral Decline 32% of Americans believe the nation is in moral decline because adults are not reading and consulting Scripture. 29% believe the nation is in moral decline because of the negative influence of the media. 25% attribute corruption from corporate greed. (Barna Group and Focus on the Family-Thriving Pastor-Pulse Check 12/9/13)

Bible Engagement in the US Lifeway Research about Bible engagement in North America finds 66% of Canadian churchgoers agree with the statement, “I desire to please and honor Jesus in all I do.” However, 34% say they rarely or never read the Bible outside of church. Only 11% read it daily and 27% a few times a week or once a month. Only 3% do daily in-depth Bible study. 53% rarely or never study the Bible. 62% disagree with the statement, “If I go several days without reading the Bible, I find myself unfulfilled.” When six other factors are present, individuals have higher levels of Bible engagement: 1) Confess wrongdoings to God and ask forgiveness. 2) Believe in Jesus Christ as the only way to heaven. 3) Make a decision to obey or follow God, knowing it might be costly. 4) Pray for people they know are not professing Christians. 5) Read a book about increasing their spiritual growth. 6) Have a one-on-one mentoring relationship with a spiritually mature Christian. There is a strong correlation between engaging the Bible and living accordance to the Scriptures. (CT’s The Exchange 11/20/13)

Great Commission Being Fulfilled According to Open Doors, 40 years ago there were only 200 Muslim converts to Christianity in Iran. Today, they estimate it is 370,000. Similar growth is occurring in the Asian subcontinent, sub-Saharan Africa and regions of the Middle East. Tragically, persecution is a sign the Great Commission is being fulfilled. (LifeSite News 12/4/13)

How Religious? 69% of Americans are either very religious (40%) or moderately religious (29%), according to a 2012 December Gallup Poll, with 31% being nonreligious. (Gallup 12/04/12)Chinese Religiously Unaffiliated The number of religiously unaffiliated people in China is more than twice the U.S. total population. About 700 million Chinese residents do not identify with a specific religious group. (Huffington Post 10/22/13)

Asian Americans Growing Fueled both by immigration and birth rates, Asian Americans are the fastest growing racial group in the U.S. With a population of 18.9 million in 2012, they are projected to reach over 40.6 million by 2050. That will increase their proportion of the total population from 5% to 9%. Asian Americans consist of more than 34 ethnicities, each with vastly different backgrounds of languages, cultures, nationalities, time of immigration and more. 83% are in these top six ethnicities: Chinese, Filipino, Asian Indian, Vietnamese, Korean or Japanese. (CT’s The Exchange 11/7/13)

R-rated Movies Damaging to Faith Young people who watch R-rated movies are more likely to have decreased church attendance and to consider their faith less important, finds a recent Baylor Univ. study. “Viewing R-rated movies was damaging to religious faith even after accounting for the importance of religion in one’s family, peer influence and parental monitoring of media, among other factors,” said researcher Phil Davignon. However, watching the movies didn’t affect whether or not young people have doubts about their faith or whether they thought it was acceptable to choose parts of the faith to believe without accepting the whole. (Review of Religious Research 6/13)

Most People Are Part of Religious Majorities Nearly 3/4 of the world’s people live in countries where their group is a religious majority of the population. (Huffington Post 10/22/13)

Hispanic Exodus Today 69% of Hispanic Americans were raised Catholic, but only 53% have remained so. 31% who left Catholicism became evangelicals, 22% Mainline Christians, 13% other and 34% are unaffiliated. (CT 12/13)Hindus Geographically Concentrated 97% of the world’s Hindus live in only three countries: India, Mauritius and Nepal. (Huffington Post 10/22/13)

Alternative Punishment for Nonviolent Crimes American evangelical leaders overwhelmingly support alternatives to incarceration for nonviolent offenders, according to the November Evangelical Leaders Survey. Only two percent of respondents do not support alternative measures. Evangelicals have a particular concern for those in prison as they are mentioned specifically by Jesus when telling his followers to care for the “least of these.” This concern was reflected in the June Evangelical Leaders Survey that showed nearly all evangelical leaders have visited a prison, many of whom did so in a ministry context. Through relationships formed in ministry, evangelicals have seen the negative effects imprisonment often has on prisoners and their families. (National Association of Evangelicals, 12/10/13)

Prayer Helps People Cope A Saarland Univ. and the Univ. of Mannheim in Germany study shows prayer helps people stay in control of their emotions and behavior. Those who pray when their lives become demanding find themselves better able to cope with temptation and control their emotions. (Church Leaders 12/6/13)

Religious Practice is associated with higher levels of economic well-being and academic performance as well as reductions in the incidence of crime, delinquency, drug and alcohol addiction and problems related to physical and emotional health. (LifeSite News 11/15/13)

Saturated Media Culture New research from author and psychologist Catherine Steiner-Adair finds many teens are turning to Internet videos to educate themselves on physical relationships, dating and gender stereotypes. Without parents monitoring their children’s online viewing, Internet access provides them with content that can be confusing, and graphic images that can create a false understanding of appropriate intimate behavior. This encourages teens in particular to behave in a way online they never would in face-to-face interactions. (The Big Disconnect: Protecting Childhood and Family Relationships in the Digital Age by Catherine Steiner-Adair, Harper 2013)

76 Seconds to Communicate According to LivePerson, today’s consumers want access to information and support instantly, and if they don’t find what they need quickly, they will look for it somewhere else. The study finds that, on average, consumers won’t wait more than 76 seconds if they need help during their online session. 58% are frustrated by poor quality service online. 49% continue to find websites difficult to navigate with 33% struggling to seek help or locate customer service. (Center for Media Research Brief 11/26/13)

More Info Faster Millions of Americans feel having too much information actually limits their ability to simply make a choice. When it comes to books, 35% of adults say while they enjoy reading, they feel most books are too long. Men (41%) are notably more likely than women (28%) to feel this way. Only 27% of Elders say most books feel too long, while 30% of Boomers and 31% of Busters likewise agree. Among Millennials, 49% say most books are too long for them to enjoy, yet 76% want to keep up with current trends. The research shows while people want to “stay up to speed,” they want their information to be compact. This doesn’t mean they don’t want substance; it more likely means they want to get to the substance faster. (Barna Group 10/22/13)

Time Names Pope Person of the Year Pope Francis has been named Time magazine’s 1023 Person of the Year. Francis, who is the Catholic Church’s 266th pope, is Time’s 86th person of the year. He is the 3rd pope to be named person of the year (Pope John XXIII was named in 1962, and Pope John Paul II in 1994). (Media Daily News 12/11/13)

Megachurch Stats Five million people worship in a U.S. megachurch on a typical weekend. Currently there are 1,650 megachurches in the U.S. While almost 10% of Protestant churchgoers attend a megachurch, they represent only 0.5% of the roughly 320,000 U.S. Protestant churches. While many are nondenominational, most Protestant denominations have at least one megachurch. 21% were founded in the last 20 years. 22% were founded by their current lead pastor. 79% of current megachurch pastors led their congregation through its most dramatic growth era. The median age of today’s megachurch lead pastor is 55 (5% are under 40 and 18% are under 45). (Leadership Network 12/13/13)

Younger Donor Trends According to a new Achieve survey, organizations that want to persuade people in their 20s and early 30s to give and volunteer need to update their websites frequently and include compelling details about their causes and the people they serve. Three in four donors born from 1979 to 1994 were put off when a nonprofit’s website had not been updated recently. Six in 10 want nonprofits to share stories about successful projects and programs and appreciate information about an organization’s cause and the people it serves. Also, too much info about the group itself especially bothers young donors who are open to making small donations more frequently. 84% prefer to give online. Eight in 10 have smartphones and use them to read e-mails and articles from nonprofits. Three in four have liked, retweeted or shared nonprofit content on social networks. (The Chronicle Board Report Sept./Oct. 2013)

Giving to Evangelical Churches and ministries outpaced giving to secular charities in 2012. In its 4th annual State of Giving report, ECFA reveals giving to more than 1,600 of its accredited organizations increased 6.4% last year. Donations reached $11 billion in 2012 vs. $3 billion in 2011. However, Empty Tomb, Inc. research suggests giving trends among denominations has declined for four consecutive years. The only other comparable period of prolonged decline was from 1928 through 1934, mostly during the Great Depression. (ECFA 12/4/13)

Church Attendance not the Only Decline Some reports show 80–85% of all U.S. churches are either in decline or stagnant when it comes to membership and attendance. Other reports state 50% of pastors would like to quit, and as many as 85% are discouraged. Americans no longer look to experts with answers no matter how magnetic and regardless of how great the show. They prefer to connect on a personal, one-on-one level. This is why newspapers and magazines have fewer readers and why network TV is in decline. It is also why many have dropped out of church. And this is why Facebook has grown, allowing people to connect and communicate, using new technology, to a small circle of family and friends. (American Church Magazine 11/13)

Divorce Rises in Mature Population For people 50 and over, divorce has risen to its highest level on record. A National Center for Family and Marriage Research study reports in 1990, only one in 10 people who got divorced was 50 or older; by 2009 the number was roughly one in four. If that increase holds steady, the number of over-50 divorces in 2030, based on current trends, could easily top 800,000 per year. (The Gray Divorce Revolution 11/13)

People Retiring Later Retirement is coming later in life and it no longer represents a complete exit from the workforce. Prior to the Great Recession, the average age of those who report retiring was 57, while the average for those who retired afterward is 62. The line between working and retirement is shifting, with 82% of Americans 50 and older who are working, but not yet retired, saying it is likely or very likely that they will do some work for pay during their retirement. Of those who are currently working, 47% now plan to retire at a later age than they expected when they were 40. (Center for Media Research Brief 12/2/13)

Success Guarantee? Children raised by both a Mom and Dad are more likely to go to college and to make more money than those raised by unwed and divorced parents, and the impact is greater among the poor according to a recent American Enterprise Institute panel discussion. Unwed childbearing is now the new norm for U.S. women under 30. There is also a growing class divide with the low income having more children out-of-wedlock than those with high incomes. Thomas B. Fordham Institute’s Mike Petrilli said if students follow the “success sequence”: 1) get a high school diploma 2) get a job 3) get married and 4) have babies in that order, they are “almost guaranteed to not be poor” and their children will not be poor. (Christian Post 10/31/13)

Engaged Workers Help Bottom Line Organizations with higher levels of employee engagement are more likely to retain employees, while those suffering from high turnover are likely to find employees don’t feel valued, don’t trust senior leaders and don’t understand the organization’s goals and how they contribute to meeting them. The new 2013 Trend Report: The State of Employee Engagement reports 67.7% of employees ranked as engaged in 2012 vs. 66.6% in 2010. A correlation was found between profit level and level of worker engagement. (Incentive 11/22/13)

A new Rasmussen Reports survey finds only 31% of employed Americans work 40 hours a week, 40% more than 40, including 9% who work more than 50. 28% work fewer than 40 with 10% working fewer than 20. (Rasmussen Reports 12/13/13)

Millennials Read Newspapers How many Millennials read newspaper content every week? 56%, says the Newspaper Assoc. of America. That includes both those who read print and online newspapers. 60% of those 18 to 34 who read their local newspaper or newspaper website believe it is trustworthy. 55% believe the papers operate ethically and have the public’s best interest in mind. (Ragan.com 12/12/13)

Teen Spending The recent Piper Jaffray Taking Stock with Teens consumer insights survey found fashion accounts for 39% of teen budgets. 78% of females and 82% of males shop online. 60–70% of teens prefer to shop the websites of their favorite store-based retailers. Teens represent more than one-third of video game players, and gaming accounts for 7% of teen spending. (Center for Media Research Brief 10/28/13)

Using Our Spiritual Weapons

News is coming out of Egypt about how the Church in Egypt has been using its Spiritual Weapons to help achieve the amazing turnaround in the Egyptian Government.

The Christian Church in Egypt is one of the oldest and most persecuted Churches in the world (See our Blog of 10/22/12 “The Persecuted Church of Egypt”). Under the Muslim Brotherhood, pogroms against Christians were intensified and many were forced to flee for their lives. The Christian community had nowhere else to turn but to God.

The first step toward spiritual victory came as the Church deployed the Spiritual Weapon of Church unity. In November of 2012 over 70,000 Coptic, Protestant, and Catholic believers met at the “Garbage City” Coptic Church in Cairo. The new Coptic Pope blessed the meeting and urged them to forget their past differences. This meeting was following by a larger prayer meeting in March of 2013 and then by the largest meeting of Christians in modern Egyptian history on Pentecost. The Egyptian Church found its unity, which is based on unity in Christ.

The second Spiritual Weapon to be launched was prayer, but not just any prayer. The Egyptian Church realized that Christians are called to be a blessing and that we are to bless and not curse our enemies. A leading Christian pastor even went on Arabic Television to tell Muslims that the Church was praying for them, not against them. The prayer of blessing, that God’s will be done on Earth and that our enemies be blessed to come to the knowledge of God and achieve their God given destiny, led to the earthly blessing of the end of a government which oppressed Christians and Muslims alike.

The third Spiritual Weapon used was sacrificial service. During the riots surrounding the overthrow of the Muslim Brotherhood’s tyranny many people were injured. Most were Muslims. Nevertheless, the Churches opened their doors to all who were injured and Christian doctors worked tirelessly to save lives. Thus, the Church showed its love by deeds to match its words.

We in America can learn a lot from our Egyptian Brothers. Their example of unity, prayer, blessing, and service could be the key to turning around our increasingly oppressive situation here.

Pray for the Church in Egypt and pray that the American Church will arise and use its Spiritual Weapons to turnaround our country.

Society’s Immune System Disorder

In 1918 a new strain of influenza emerged which eventually killed as many as 100 million people. Unlike most illnesses, most of the victims were young and healthy. The reason for this mystery was soon discovered: the victims were not killed by the disease, but by their own immune system’s response to the disease.

Like the human body, our social body also has an immune system designed to fight off toxins. The immune system is composed of our laws and those who enforce them. The toxins are people whose behavior is damaging to society. But in America we are reaching the point where, like the 1918 influenza pandemic, our immune system is attacking the body.

Take the war on drugs. We all know that drug abuse is a terrible thing, so we passed laws against drug abuse and drug dealing. The effect of those laws was to criminalize common behavior in many minority communities and thrust the drug dealing business into a highly profitable big business. We passed more laws with tougher penalties, sending many minority community members to prison and allowing law enforcement to seize suspect property. The result is a devastated minority community and laws that let police confiscate cash from anyone, as in a recent case where a man on his way to buy a car had his money seized by police. The immune system has turned on the body, creating toxic results.

The recent tragedy involving the death of Travon Martin is an example. The oppression of young black men comes not from the old evil of racism, but from the modern war on drugs. The black community lives this reality, while most middle class whites are unable to understand what would drive a young black man to respond the way Mr. Martin did. Thus, more division is created as the social body is infected with more and more toxins.

It is time for Christians to deploy their spiritual weapons to bring healing to our society. The spiritual weapons needed are love and forgiveness, and we are going to have to let go of some of our cherished political positions to do so. We must admit that the war on drugs, like prohibition before it, is a good idea gone bad. We have made criminals richer and prisons fuller, destabilized minority communities and put all of our freedoms at risk, caused crime wars in our cities and abroad, and subsidized killers and terrorists around the world.

Drug crime can be stopped the same way prohibition era bootlegging was: legalize it, tame it, and tax it. Laws can be changed to restore our freedoms, and restoration can begin in the minority communities. Such monumental changes will not come unless the Church humbles itself, prays, seeks God’s face and repents (2 Chr 7:14). Then God will forgive and heal our land.

Let us pray that the Church will awaken to society’s immune system disorder and use its spiritual warfare weapons to heal our land.

Godless Liberty

Just the days after the Americans celebrate their Revolution, the French celebrate theirs, on Bastille Day July 14.

The two revolutions could not have been more different. The Americans honored God (See our Blog of 7/3/13 “Declaration Day”). The French, on the other hand, adopted the atheistic, anti-Christian values of the French Enlightenment and set out to eradicate God from public life. Churches were closed, priests were persecuted, and the calendar was remade without any Christian holidays. To replace the Virgin Mary, the revolutionary leaders invented the atheistic “Goddess of Liberty”, which became the emblem of Godless liberty.

The fruit of the revolutions was also very different. America became a beacon of hope for the world as it worked to make its dream of equality and God given rights become a reality. In France, the godless foundation of the revolution meant that all moral restraint on power evaporated, and the infamous Reign of Terror began. Neither life no liberty were safe, and even the leaders were carried off one by one to the Terror. Finally order was restored but all hope of liberty vanished under the iron fisted rule of Napoleon Bonaparte. It turns out that Godless liberty is no liberty at all.

Sad to say, the lesson of the French Revolution has been repeated over and over since then. The Communist revolutions in Russia, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Cuba, and elsewhere produced massive death and eliminated freedom. The same holds true for the Nazis in Germany and the Fascists in Italy who, like Napoleon, lead the whole world into war. The post colonial socialists in Africa grabbed power after elections, giving rise to the famous statement of “One man, one vote, one time”. And now we watch the same thing happen as Islamist extremists try to turn the “Arab Spring” into winter for the God given rights of their people.

Our hearts and our prayers go out to the people in the Middle East who are struggling to achieve some measure of equality and freedom. We especially pray for the persecuted Christian minorities in places like Egypt (See our Blog of 10/22/12 “The Persecuted Church in Egypt) and Syria who are continually under persecution from the Islamist Militants. And let us also not forget Israel, which is caught between turmoil in Egypt and civil war in Syria.

Let us pray that the precious gift of Godly Liberty, and especially religious liberty, can overcome the evil of Godless liberty.

Cycles of Unforgiveness

This week, on June 28, we remember two anniversary dates which are linked together in a cycle of bloodshed and unforgiveness.

On July 28, 1914, 99 years ago, a young Serbian terrorist assassinated the Archduke and Crown Prince of the great Austro-Hungarian Empire. The act led Austria-Hungary to revenge itself by declaring  war on Serbia. The Russians entered the blood feud to protect their fellow Slavs, the Serbians. The Germans came to the support of Austria-Hungary, France and England came to the aid of Russia, and Europe erupted into the massive slaughter we now call World War I. All because of a cycle of unforgivness.

Five years and millions of deaths later, the war was officially brought to a close on June 28, 1919 in the Treaty of Versailles. Once again, unforgivness carried the day as the victorious Allies imposed draconian conditions on the defeated Germans. The resulting hardship and resentment created an opportunity for Adolph Hitler and his Nazi party to drive Europe into a second horrendous conflict which became the Second World War. Then, for another 50 years, the Russians extracted their revenge by turning the Eastern European nations into subservient police states. The First World War, called the “War to end all wars,” ended with the peace treaty of Versailles, which a critic called “The peace to end all peace.”

It was up to the Americans to break the cycle of unforgiveness. With the Marshall Plan in Europe and a humane occupation of Japan, the Americans turned their German and Japanese enemies into friends. America has also forgiven its cold war enemies in China, Vietnam, Russia, and Eastern Europe, leading the World into a time of prosperity and relative peace, and making way for the unprecedented worldwide Christian revival.

The American ability to forgive goes back to our history as a Christian nation. The Lord commands us to forgive our enemies, and the experience after the Second World War showed how the Biblical command to love our enemies produces Godly fruit of peace and revival. Forgiveness is perhaps the most powerful spiritual weapon to change the atmosphere and bring God’s answers into a situation.

There will always be those who are driven to attack others, and we thank God for those who protect us (See our 5/22/2013 Blog “Honoring Our Defenders”). But we must also know that time is no true peace without forgiveness.

Let us pray that we will remember that we are called to bless and not curse, and that we can use the spiritual weapon of forgiveness to end destructive cycles of unforgiveness.
